2022 FF WRAP UP!!
Kia ora all forestry and wood industry folk and welcome to the Future Foresters newsletter!!
It has been a minute since our last newsletter but we’ve been busy behind the scenes working away on our goals.
FIRSTLY - A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR OUTGOING COMMITTEE MEMBERS
We’ve had many people contributing to FF over the last few years and some of them have moved on to open up opportunities for new Future Foresters and to do big things elsewhere.
We’d like to express our HUGE gratitude to those who have put so much of their own time into FF and have made it what it is:
Two of our founding members: Sheridan Ashford and Adrian Loo
Some of our OG regional leaders: Hazel Swanson, Dave Saathof, Lauchie Weston, Christoph Riedel, and Josh Tansey
NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS & 2 MORE OPPORTUNITIES
We welcomed a few new faces to our FF Committee earlier this year to keep things fresh!
Our committee is now made up of: - Exec: Acacia Farmery, Alfred Duval, Jack Palmer, Marcella Pitt, Lily Marshall - Regional Leaders: Georgia Craig (East Coast), Sarah de Gouw (Sth/Otago), Dom Cleary (Cant), Rob Morbey (Nth), Kendra Monteith (HB), Max Saathof (SNI)
and….
BIG NEWS - due to moves, we’ve got two spots to fill early in 2023: CNI and Top of the South Regional Leaders!
Keep an eye out on the Facebook FF Members Group in January for more info on how to apply if you’re interested.
FIELDAYS FORESTRY HUB
The Forestry Hub was an innovative and positive snapshot of what we’ve got going on in forestry.
Many chats were had, including with potential Future Foresters who were investigating their career options. The most interested students were lucky to come away with some FF shirts to sweeten the deal.
We also had a chance to catch up with Hon Stuart Nash and Jason Wilson to look ahead at the potential our industry has.
CAREERS EXPOS AND SCHOOL VISITS
We’ve been teaming up with industry groups across the country to spread the word about the benefits of forestry as a career option. We’ve reached people from 5 years old through to careers advisors and teachers!
We love these opportunities to work together for the industry. Some of our efforts this year have been:
WIDE Trust, FF & Grow Me - CATE Conference booth and workshop
Wood is Good school events across the country
Careers expos with SNI Wood Council
INCLUSIVE LEADERSHIP TRAINING
This year our professional development training was Inclusive Leadership run by Diversity Works. We held them in Christchurch, Napier and Rotorua and had over 40 attendees overall!
Our industry is getting more diverse (and hopefully will continue to do so!) so it was timely to provide some hot tips to our future leaders. The focus was on 1) understanding how the brain works in terms of unconscious bias and 2) how to lead people to get the most out of them and make sure they’re happy and thriving at work.
CREATING A NETWORK OF NEW FORESTERS
As well as professional development, we’ve also hosted networking events in our regions for people to get to know their fellow regional foresters and make connections.
Thanks for everyone who got amongst these catch ups in Napier, Whangarei, Christchurch, Gisborne, and Rotorua! Always a good time networking over a few snacks and cold brews.
Looking forward to hosting some more in 2023!
Make sure to join our FB members page to find out about events happening near you! Click here to get to it.
Thanks for getting amongst our events and for all your ongoing support!
Hope you get a good summer break and have an awesome Christmas!!
